Fast Paced Food for People on the Go - 2010-09-01 22:59:40
Thought: Beyond the Japadog and other street meat, Vancouver has opened up its streets to many more food options. Now you don’t have to go to a market to get these culinary treats on wheels. Since July, new vendors have popped up on several of Vancouver’s streets offering dim sum, burritos, southern bbq, meat skewers, donairs, noodles, falafels, pizza and more. This pilot project saw 800 applications of which only 17 lucky winners were selected in a lottery. The pilot project ends in April 2011 when Vancouver City Council will decide whether to make it a staple in the city. With Blackberries, iPhones and now more Street Vendors, we’ll never have a reason to sit down. On Hungryhank.com find a place to dine anywhere in Canada. Bubble Tea Hub on Fraser Street - 2010-05-07 12:10:46
Thought: For some reason, Vancouver’s Fraser Street is a bubble tea-crazed area. Perhaps it’s the high school students nearby. You have your pick that’s for sure. On one block alone, between 41st and 42nd, you have a choice of four places. Even Starbucks can’t boast such coverage. Along a four block strip, I can count eight places offering bubble tea – that’s more bubble tea than coffee shops – go figure. Among these are Wakame Sushi, Green Leaf Natural Food, O Tea Bubble Tea Lounge, Little Sweetea House, Tapioca Express, Big Bite Cafe, Angel Cake Cafe, T-Hut Cafe and Money Meats. I’ve tried the bubble tea at seven of those eight places listed, so I think it’s fair to say I’ve done my research. Of those eight, three of them specialize in bubble tea drinks while the rest offer bubble tea as a beverage on their larger menu. Each offers something a little different, whether it’s the food items or the atmosphere. If all you want is bubble tea, I’d pick Green Leaf. The name will make you think they serve salad, but it’s just a huge menu of every bubble tea drink you can think of – nothing more than that – unless you want instant noodles or toast. The fruit is fresh, the pearls are the perfect tenderness and the sweetness just right – it tops on my list and is one of the best I’ve had. Newcomer O Tea Lounge has created a comfortable chic hang out which makes perfect sense for the area of roaming teenagers, but they still need to work on their drinks. I found their drink not blended thoroughly, probably because they were using a household blender, and they use syrup instead of fresh fruit. Tapioca Express was pretty good and surprisingly, so were the bubble tea drinks at Wakame Sushi. The only one I haven’t tried is Money Meats because it’s also a butcher and I think raw meat and bubble tea drinks should not be sold under one roof especially when the premises are as dingy as they are. So with the warm weather approaching, bring on the cold drinks. If you’re getting bored of the frapps (Starbucks can now customize your blended drinks), check out Fraser Street for bubble tea.
Dine Out Vancouver 2010 Apr 26–May 6 - 2010-03-09 12:18:19
Thought: The ever so popular Dine Out Vancouver is back this April. Usually in January and February when the restaurant business is quiet, it got pushed back to accommodate the Vancouver 2010 Olympics (what afantastic Olympics for Canada!). February was record-breaking business for many downtown restaurants feeding the hordes of international visitors. If by chance you haven’t heard of Dine Out Vancouver, it’s your best chance to get a taste of some of the best food in Vancouver without breaking the bank. Participating restaurants offer a three-course meal featuring their signature items at a set price of $18, $28 or $38. Last year, 188 restaurants took part offering mouth-watering menu items sometimes at half the price of their regular menu. The event takes place April 26th to May 6th. Tourism Vancouver will publish the list of restaurants on April 19th at which time, you’ll be able to check out the menus and make your reservations. Best Places to Eat During 2010 Olympics! - 2010-02-24 10:29:04
Thought: If you’re coming to Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics, you’ll be pleased with the many dining choices. As a city neighbouring the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver is known for its seafood and ethnic cuisine – amongst the most popular are Asian and Indian. Here is a list of restaurants that are spacious and will give you a taste of the city. 1. Dim Sum at Sun Sui Wah – It’s a busy place, but you can make a reservation. 2. Dinner at the Cannery – This iconic waterfront seafood restaurant is losing its lease so it’ll be your last chance to take in the view. It’s off the beaten path but well worth it. 3. Family friendly Griffins – If you’ve got kids, but still want to have a great meal, Griffins' varied menu has something for everyone. 4. All India Sweets – Vegetarian buffet - Meat dishes also available. 5. Market at Shangri-La – This won’t be a secret for long. Wonderful high-end westcoast meal without breaking the bank. 6. Campagnolo – Authentic Italian cuisine and there’s a charcuterie upstairs. 7. Beefy Beef Noodle – Great for lunch, these Tawainese savoury beef noodle soups are becoming very popular in Vancouver. 8. Pajo’s Fish & Chips – Just off the docks in quaint Steveston. Large portions, great fish and great prices 9. Sushi at Tsunami – Puts in you the heart of the shopping district in Vancouver. Tsunami has fresh sushi and a variety of other Japanese dishes. Around the corner is Shabusen for all you can eat sushi. 10. Kam’s Place – Friendly service and consistently delicious Singaporean food plus all your favourite Thai dishes. Try their curries and Tom Yum soup. It's also a time when Vancouver is bustling with activities, making it perfect for date nights. Among the options are the popular Vancouver fireworks, Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS), Bard on the Beach, Caribbean Festival, or you can take in an outdoor concert at Deer Lake Park or Malkin Bowl.
